The new Reno3 Pro has good makings of flagship devices, but due to gaps in equipment it does not reach them a bit.
The OPPO Reno3 Pro smartphone in its lineup is a senior in rank, rightly wearing the prefix “Pro” in its name, thereby emphasizing its belonging to elite gadgets. Compared with the Reno3 version, the more advanced one received elite body materials and a filling. However, this equipment device remained in the middle segment without receiving protection from moisture, wireless charging and, of course, a fashionable 3K (3168 × 1440 pixels) display.
But the price tag for this model turned out to be very high. I’ll tell you what it is explained below, but I’ll immediately emphasize that the majority of it is the cost of hardware, which can include an extremely bright and clear AMOLED display, giant RAM and built-in storage for user files.

OPPO Reno3 Pro comes in almost the same box as the Reno3. The smartphone comes with a transparent silicone bumper, wired headphones-headset with a USB Type-C connector, a 30 W power supply with a thick cable. The latter is necessary for the normal operation of fast charging.
OPPO Reno3 Pro Design Features and Materials
The OPPO Reno3 Pro smartphone turned out to be very compact, despite the large screen size - as much as 6.5 inches. By the way, its European version is equipped with a slightly smaller display - 6.4 inches.
The device lies comfortably in the hand and feels weighty, like a single metal bar. And all because the frame of the smartphone is made of durable aviation aluminum, and the back cover is made of tempered glass Corning Gorilla Glass 5. By the way, the screen glass is also made using this technology and has smooth fillets that extend to the side edges.
It seems that this has become the main trend in high-end devices, and OPPO tried to play on it here. The manufacturer emphasizes high style in a very thin case - its thickness is only 7.7 mm, which is not often found in the middle class.
The metal frame with a matte finish gives the device elegance. At the same time, at the joints with the back cover and the display, a sharp edge is slightly felt, which helps to more reliably hold the device with your fingers.
The design of the smartphone should be recognized as classic, as indicated by the typical placement of all the controls, including a module of four rear cameras and a slot for SIM cards (it is two-sided, with a silicone seal).
The USB Type-C charging port on the lower edge is adjacent to the microphone and the speakerphone openings. By the way, the manufacturer used stereo sound in this model, using the earpiece as a second speaker.
What is the focus
To attract customers to this device, which is very expensive by modern standards, the manufacturer equipped it with a large amount of RAM - 12 GB - and built-in storage - 256 GB.
One could also note the main camera with the ability to shoot at a resolution of 48 megapixels and highly enlightened optics f / 1.70. About how the camera showed itself in different modes, will be described below, but for the impatient, I note that it is not enough stars from the sky. Another manufacturer paid special attention to the display. Let's start with him.
The screen is bright, with support for 90 Hz
This model has a 6.5-inch display with an AMOLED matrix and a resolution of 2400 × 1080. The density of dots is 402 ppi, which cannot be called an outstanding parameter for this screen size. Although this is enough to not see individual pixels at close range.
The developers made a special emphasis on extremely high brightness - at the maximum level it is declared 1000 nits, which is really very powerful. In practice, the level of 50% is very much for a well-lit room. In sunny weather, under the open sky, the screen brightness is sufficient, without even increasing its value to 100%.
In the screen settings, you can activate the blue filter, change the color temperature. In addition, there are presets for color reproduction, for example, “bright” (extended color space) and “delicate” (sRGB space). By default, the smartphone is set to "bright" mode. OPPO Screen Image Engine (OSIE) technology makes the image more saturated and contrast, improving visual effects in third-party applications.
The company places particular emphasis on the ability to use the increased display frame rate of 90 Hz in the smartphone, which is available in all applications supporting this function. It feels like it gives a smoother (without ripples in the eyes) scrolling text on sites and a special effect of a smooth picture in games. But the battery charge in this mode is spent faster.
Performance in tests and games
The smartphone is equipped with the new Qualcomm SDM765G processor from the mid-price segment, made according to the 7-nm process technology. The “G” index in the abbreviation indicates an increased frequency of operation of the ARM Cortex-A76 cores up to 2.4 GHz (instead of 2.3 GHz in a regular weight).
Of course, this is not a top-end chip, but for everyday tasks and resource-intensive games, it will be enough with excesses. In particular, according to tests, it is slightly inferior to the flagship of two years ago Qualcomm Snapdragon 845. In addition, a number of tasks are undertaken by artificial intelligence, the computational ability of which is increased by 200% here.
The graphics processor Adreno 620 is responsible for processing the graphics, and according to the developers of iron, its performance is increased by 30%. To ensure good heat dissipation during high CPU loads, the smartphone design uses a multi-layer liquid-cooled radiator system.
This allowed to reduce the power consumption of the device by 35%. In performance tests, when watching high-definition video and in demanding games, the back cover and display did not heat up much. Benchmarks showed the temperature of the CPU and battery no higher than 42 degrees.
To obtain objective results, tests were conducted in the popular benchmarks GeekBench and 3DMark. In them, the device scored: 619 and 1 829 points in the first and 3 301 and 3 066 points in the second, respectively. This is about half that of the recently tested OPPO Find X2 with the flagship Snapdragon 865 processor.
As for the gaming capabilities of the smartphone, the manufacturer has taken care of comfortable work in these resource-intensive programs, including using a frequency of 90 Hz, which gives a smoother picture.
Among the pre-installed applications, of which there are very few, there is a utility "Games". Using it, you can activate various presets, for example, "Competition mode", "Balance mode" and "Energy saving mode", which allow you to configure the device for maximum performance, balanced and economical modes, respectively. At the same time, the application will give a forecast of how much battery you will have with one or another processor operation scheme.
The camera is no worse than the flagships
The manufacturer makes good announcements on the main camera unit, of which the “highlight of the program” is the 48 megapixel module (f / 1.70). In addition, there is a zoom camera with a 13 megapixel sensor (f / 2.40), which is capable of bringing the subject closer to 20 times (using digital zoom), and an 8 megapixel wide-angle module (f / 2.20). An additional 2 MP single-lens (f / 2.40) is designed to improve the quality of shooting in portrait mode.
The main camera test was carried out in a sunny day and cloudy weather in urban landscapes. Special attention, in my opinion, is deserved by a telephoto lens, in which electronic stabilization and the noise smoothing function work fine. Details, of course, are lost at the same time, but the picture looks pretty nice.
Although a similar result can be achieved simply by looking in detail at the photo from this smartphone, taken in 48 megapixel mode. It allows only 4: 3 aspect ratio, which is not very convenient when viewed on 16: 9 screens.
I liked the quality of the images of the main unit in all modes, including the wide-angle module, which provides good coverage of objects in urban landscapes and preserves the correct geometry of buildings. In addition, the smartphone can use the double and five times the zoom mode for macro photography. The result is impressive.
The manufacturer emphasizes the use of artificial intelligence during the shooting, which should improve the result of both day and night photo shoots. Examples of day and night photos are given below.
There are legends about the outstanding capabilities of the selfie camera, it is really gorgeous and the detailing of this optics with a 32 megapixel matrix is beyond praise. However, during an open-air photo shoot, she often exposes the foreground, too highlighting the background.
It is noteworthy that even when shooting in 4K, electronic stabilization at the camera works fine, and in addition there is even a five-fold zoom, which is very rare. But in this resolution, only the number of frames of 30 FPS is allowed, which is why when watching a video, the effect of a rolling shutter appears, which causes an unpleasant ripple in the eyes.
Autonomy and safety
The smartphone uses a battery with a capacity of 4025 mAh with a quick charge function. The main role in this is played by a special charger with an increased power of 30 W with support for VOOC 4.0 technology. As tests have shown, in 30 minutes the battery charges up to 75%, and in 60 minutes - up to 100%.
Quickly charging your smartphone is great. But what about autonomy? It turned out that not everything is as rosy as we would like. In everyday use with an average load, the device will last about two full days. If you sit in resource-intensive games for a long time, watch YouTube or a high-fidelity video for hours, then the charge on your smartphone can end by the end of the working day.
As for security, in this area the company equipped the device with the latest technology. To unlock the smartphone, you can use either a regular numeric password, or a face scanner or a fingerprint scanner, built-in under the glass of the screen. Everything works almost instantly, without errors, and does not cause any complaints.

Smartphone OPPO Reno3 Pro makes a good impression as a modern laconic design, and good performance. The processor power, RAM capacity and built-in storage will last for many years. Good protection from scratches by the tempered glass of the screen and the back cover allows you to hope for the safety of appearance, even if it is worn without a case. Although for reliability it is better to immediately clothe it in the included silicone bumper.
The increased exchange rate also affected the price tag of the device, which came close to the cost of modern flagships. Nevertheless, good equipment gives potential for the future, given the rather high quality of shooting from the fourth module of the rear camera.
The selfie camera is very clear, but it is not always possible to get a well-designed background with it. Some complaints are related to a rather weak battery, which can run out quickly during games.
