5 tips to help fix if the Home button on the iPhone does not work
The Home button on older iPhone models often breaks. If this happened with your smartphone, the easiest way to immediately take it to the service. You may not even have to pay for the repair - if you bought your iPhone less than a year ago and did not fill it in, it is still covered by Apple's warranty.
However, there are several ways to solve the problem if you cannot or do not want to contact the salon.
1. “Calibrate” the “Home” button
Officially, this function has no name, but it helps bring the button back to life.
- Open any stock application - for example, " Photo ", " Calendar " or " Calculator ”.
- Press and hold the power button until a slider appears to turn off the device.
- Press and hold the Home button for about 10 seconds. After that, the shutdown slider should disappear, and the application should close.
This works on all iPhones with the Home button - it doesn’t matter if it’s physical or touch-sensitive, as in iPhone 7 and 8. If the button doesn’t work, repeat the process several times: sometimes 3-4 attempts are required, but this trick saved the bill for repair a lot of users.
2. Wipe the button with isopropanol
If you often use your smartphone, over time it collects a lot of dirt and dust. All this can clog the button mechanism and disable it. Accordingly, you can try to clear the key so that it works again. Unfortunately, this tip is not applicable to iPhone 7 and 8, because the buttons in them are touch-sensitive.
- First, wipe the area with a dry, clean microfiber cloth.
- Moisten a cloth with a solution with a high (98-99%) isopropanol content. It is used, for example, in means for degreasing nails.
- Wipe the button with a tissue and press the Home button several times to get the product inside. Isopropanol evaporates in air, so nothing threatens the internal components.
If the cause really was dirt, after such a cleaning the button should work.
3. Restore the firmware
This is not the fastest method, but still worth a try if you need this button. The fact is that often problems with the key can be associated with an error in the software. This can be fixed through DFU mode.
Important : in this case, all data from the smartphone will be deleted, so make sure you have a fresh backup. In addition, get ready to spend at least an hour on this process, since the system of your smartphone will be completely reinstalled.
4. Use the charging cable to straighten the button
The Home button is connected to the other components of the smartphone with a small cable, which is located next to the charging connector. Some users managed to fix the button by applying a little pressure to this area with the help of a charging cable - this may work in your case if the problem is disconnecting this cable.
- Put your smartphone on charge.
- Gently press on the base of the cable near the connector - so that the part inside is directed toward the Home button in the manner of a lever.
- While holding the cable in this position, press the button several times.
Of course, this is done very carefully so as not to break anything. And this applies not only to the smartphone, but also to the cable: if the connector breaks and remains inside, it will be almost impossible to pull it out yourself.
5. Configure the virtual button
If you didn’t succeed in bringing the physical button back to life, you can replace it with a screen button. For this:
- Open “ Settings ” → “ Universal Access ” → “ Touch ” → AssistiveTouch . In older versions of iOS, go to " Settings » → « Basic » → « Accessibility » → AssistiveTouch .If you cannot exit the current application to open the settings, reboot the smartphone.
- Toggle the slider next to AssistiveTouch to the active position. A translucent button will appear on the screen. Click on it to see the context menu.
- You can drag the button on the screen so that it does not block the necessary elements, and clamp it, simulating a long press.
You can disable the button through the settings, or by asking Siri about it.
